Keeping Your Cat Hydrated

Keeping Your Cat Hydrated

Cats are the not best drinkers and you really can't tell them to 'go drink some water' like you can with a dog.  Keeping your cat hydrated has many health benefits with less veterinarian visits!

When your cat stays hydrated there will be less chances of a high amount of crystals found in the urine.  High levels of crystals can come together to form an actual stone in the urinary tract.  These stones can irritate the urinary tract and have the potential to cause urinary obstruction which would lead to an emergency surgery.

When cats stay hydrated their liver will also function properly, flushing waste from the body. Having normal liver enzymes is the best health for your cat!

So how do you keep your cat hydrated?  Here are a few simple steps that you can take:

  • Offer a watering fountain for your cat.  With continuous water flowing, cats are more encouraged to drink on their own.
  • Turn on the water facet to a constant drip for your cat, if your cat is allowed on the counters or course.
  • Offer can food on a daily basis and be sure the moisture content is 78% or higher!  If you are concerned with oral health with feeding can food, check out ioVet Oral Pet Water Additive for a simple way to keep your cats gums healthy!
