With our expertise in the pet food industry, we have had numerous pet owners tell us about costly surgeries they endured with their pets due to swallowing rawhide chews.
|Rawhide Bone Chews|
Rawhides can provide many benefits for pets and pet owners like:
Rawhide chews are made of the inner layer of cow or horse hide that is cleaned and pressed into different shapes or sizes. Some contain treats inside the rawhide flavored with chicken, beef, or liver.
Rawhides can be dangerous to dogs because they are not fully digestible. Have you ever watched a dog chew one and have seen the rawhide begin to look like dough? That doughy substance can “gum-up” your dog’s intestines, preventing the dog from being able to evacuate waste. The removal of the lodged rawhide can involve costly surgery and anesthesia for your dog. Suddenly, rawhide doesn’t seem like such a good value anymore, does it?
Bully Sticks provide many of the same benefits as rawhides, but cost a little more. Bully sticks are made from beef or cow, and can be digested and processed, just as their food can.
|Bully Stick Chews – 6″|
Bully sticks come in many sizes to accommodate different sized-dogs. Like rawhide, bully sticks can last from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the size of the stick and the duration of time the pet is given to chew it in one sitting. Bully sticks are a great source of protein, but are a higher in calories, so, like with any chew, give sparingly. Generally, bully sticks contain around 80-85% protein, 1-2% fat, and about 29 calories per inch of stick (thepetsperspective.com).
Like any treat or chew, always monitor your pet, and take the chew away from the pet when it reaches choking-hazard size, about 2″ or less.
